Frederick Douglass left his mark on American society and history not only through his words but also through his public image. Douglass was the most photographed American of the nineteenth century. Douglass endured sitting for a notable one hundred and sixty photographs, appearing in portraits, drawings, sculptures, and public murals based on the pictures taken of him. His first photograph would be taken during the year 1841 and his last would be 1895 about twelve hours after his death.
